S1. Anabolic agents

What are anabolic agents?

Anabolic agents are chemical substances that ‘step up’ the anabolic processes in the system. They influence protein metabolism by boosting protein synthesis (anabolic effect) and suppressing the breakdown of proteins into amino acids (anti-catabolic effect).

Anabolic agents are divided into two subclasses: “Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS)” and “Other anabolic agents.”
